Edge Span S60-TS Smart Node

Edge Span S60-TS is an outdoor solar battery enclosure for traffic light and fixture light control. Its control and communication are developed based on thingsboard IoT gateway. The solution is mainly used in various developing countries and post-war reconstruction countries. These countries and regions usually have backward power infrastructure or are damaged by war. Using solar energy as the core to provide energy enables cities to restore traffic and nighttime lighting as quickly as possible. At the same time, in order to meet the needs of winter in cold areas, the system battery can have a built-in heater so that the battery always works in a suitable temperature range. The system ingress protection level reaches IP65/NEMA 4, which is suitable for deployment in any harsh environment. Edge Span S60-TS outdoor solar battery enclosure mainly includes the following main subsystems:

The system’s peripherals are mainly as follows:

  • Light Sensor

The system peripherals include a light sensor to detect whether it is day or night. The system will determine whether the street fixture light is turned on or off based on the Lux value measured by the light sensor.

  • Human Detection Radar
The system includes a human detection radar that can detect a 10m range. The system will adjust the intensity of the street fixture light according to whether there are pedestrians passing by. When there are no pedestrians, the light intensity is 50%. When there are pedestrians passing by, the street fixture light intensity can be configured to be 100% for 30-120 seconds. This can make more efficient use of solar energy, allowing the system to operate longer during snowy winters, for example.
  • Traffic Light

Generally, we customize the control logic according to the needs of customers. For example, some customers only need to provide power. Some customers want to set it to flash at a certain frequency. Some customers need to customize more complex traffic control logic. We can develop it according to the needs of customers.

  • Street Fixture Light
The system is equipped with a constant current LED light source as a street fixture light.
 
All the above devices are monitored and managed by Thingsboard IoT gateway.
  • Thingsboard IoT Gateway
The built-in Thingsboard IoT gateway is an industrial-grade smart control gateway designed by edgeware specifically for smart edge control scenarios related to outdoor solar battery enclosures. The control logic inside can be customized and programmed according to the customer’s scenario. In this smart traffic light control scenario with outdoor solar battery enclosure as the core, Thingsboard IoT gateway monitors the status of light sensors and human detection radars and controls street fixture lights accordingly.
 

For the power system are all depends on the 500W MPPT solar controller and lithium battery system.

  • Solar Controller
The system has a built-in industrial level 500W MPPT solar controller. It is a solar controller designed specifically for outdoor applications. It has high efficiency, high reliability, fanless natural heat dissipation design, and wide temperature operating range. And the solar controller is monitored and controlled by thingsboard IoT gateway, which can achieve complete solar power generation and usage statistics so that customers can better understand the output and use of solar energy.
  • Lithium Battery Designed for Solar Battery Scenario
The system has a built-in 24V46AH LiFePO4 lithium battery, which has an overall cycle number of 4,000 times and can support the entire operating life cycle of the entire site without replacing the battery. Based on the different countries and regions where the Edge Span S60-TS outdoor solar battery enclosure is deployed, we will have different configuration strategies. In particular, for some winter conditions where the temperature is below -10°C, a heater needs to be installed. We generally recommend that the battery operating temperature is greater than -10°C. For the installation of a heater, the battery will self-heat and adjust according to the detected temperature. The capacity of the battery can also be specially customized according to the customer’s scenario, such as expanding its capacity to cope with higher power loads.
 
Thingsboard IoT gateway uses 4G backhaul, and we can configure different wireless modules according to the wireless frequency bands in the customer’s country.
  • North Bound Interface
 The system’s north bound interface can be the thingsboard software platform, the Edgeware Convergence software platform, or even a third-party software platform.

The on and off of the street fixture light is completely controlled by the local calculation and control of the thingsboard IoT gateway. Communication with the software server is not a prerequisite. The on and off of the street fixture light can be controlled according to the preset threshold value. When the light sensor detects that the light intensity is daytime, the thingsboard IoT gateway turns off the street fixture light through the control module. When the light sensor detects that the light intensity is night, the street fixture light is turned on through the control module.

In many parts of the world, using solar energy in winter is quite challenging, because low-temperature areas often have long periods of snowy weather and insufficient sunlight. In addition, in winter, the sunlight in many areas is weak. However, it is not cost-effective to configure excessive batteries in the outdoor solar battery enclosure for this situation. Therefore, we designed the Winter Power Saving mode for our customers. The power distribution is determined according to the priority of the equipment. When the remaining capacity of the battery is lower than a threshold, only the power consumption of the highest priority equipment is guaranteed, and other equipment is shut down, so that the highest priority equipment in the system can provide services for as long as possible.

Edgeware uses light sensors in many scenarios, and ESLT-61B is one of them. Its overall Ingress Protection reaches IP65, which is very suitable for deployment in various harsh environments. Its measurement accuracy reaches 4% at 25℃, and it can test the light intensity range of 0-200000Lux. It is very suitable for building various smart systems in conjunction with Edge Span S60-TS outdoor solar battery enclosure. Edgeware has also developed a driver for this device in thingsboard IoT gateway, which can facilitate customer deployment and use.
