How to implement one-stop deployment of IEC101 IEC104 gateway indoors and outdoors

Preface
The full names of IEC101 and IEC104 are IEC 60870-5-101 and IEC 60870-5-104 respectively. As commonly used protocols in modern power networks, they play an extremely important role in the remote control, monitoring and management of power facilities. IEC 101 is usually carried on RS-485 or RS-232 interfaces and is suitable for low-speed serial communication scenarios. IEC 104 is carried on Ethernet and uses TCP/IP protocol, which is suitable for high-speed network communication scenarios. The scenarios that require IEC101 and IEC104 transmission at the same time are relatively complex, including indoor and outdoor scenarios. This article will introduce the IEC101/104 backhaul site design based on Edgeware products.

1.IEC101 IEC104 Application and Topology

The figure above is a basic topology of a typical IEC101 IEC104 scenario. Generally, the IEC101 protocol is used for monitoring and control of RTU, transformer, power plant, solar station, etc. IEC101 is also known as IEC 60870-5-101. It defines the protocol for common components in power grids such as transformers and power stations to report device status information or implement control to their superior devices through low-speed serial interfaces such as RS485 or RS232. However, due to the transmission distance limitations of RS485 and RS232, IE101 cannot complete the transmission of information to the remote SCADA server. This requires the use of IEC104. IEC104 is the full name of IEC 60870-5-104, which transmits the monitoring and management information of transformers and power stations over 4G or IP networks and sends it to the original SCADA server.
The protocol model looks simple, but when we analyze the actual scenario, we will find that the situation is more complicated and there are many factors to consider.
2.Challenges Faced by Actual Deployment Scenarios of IEC101 and IEC104

If it is an indoor scene like the one in the figure above, it is generally necessary to deploy an IEC101/104 gateway to implement the function. However, because it is indoors, the scene is relatively simple. The only point that needs to be paid attention to is that the EMC design of the IEC101/104 gateway is more in line with the requirements of the power plant so as to interfere with the power plant equipment. At the same time, the IEC101/104 gateway itself must also have a strong resistance to the relatively strong EMC radiation inside the power plant.

If it is an outdoor scene like the one in the figure above, it is not just a simple matter of deploying an IEC101/IEC104 gateway. Because the equipment is outdoors, there are many factors that we need to consider. The outdoor environment is more complicated. For example, in some areas, the air humidity is high. If a general outdoor cabinet IP55 level is deployed for a long time, it will cause problems such as rust on the equipment. It may also cause condensation problems and cause equipment short circuit. For example, in some scenarios, when the power plnat is out of power, the IEC101/IEC104 gateway with a UPS needs to power the peripheral sensors, so as to continue to transmit information to the headquarters SCADA to collect some details of the power plant power outage or transformer failure. In this case, it is necessary to design a one-stop deployment of IEC101 IEC104 gateway outdoors. This is the design solution that Edgeware is best at.
