How to use 48V DC UPS system to make security camera cabinet easy to operate and deploy?

The security camera cabinet of the video surveillance project is the edge node of the entire CCTV network, and its role is crucial. As the aggregation node of the cameras under the site, its long-term stable and reliable operation is related to the KPI of the entire CCTV network operation. At the same time, if the security camera cabinet is not highly integrated in design and manufacturing, and the system design is not good enough, it will greatly affect the time cost and delivery cost of site deployment. Edgeware believes that through correct system design, the design of the security camera cabinet can be optimized by using a 48V DC UPS system, thus marking the security camera cabinet easy to operate and deploy.

Challenges of Deploying Security Camera Cabinet Outdoors

Traditional security camera cabinets are generally composed of the following parts:

  • UPS

Generally, due to the limited choices in the market, customers will choose 1kva AC UPS. Some are 19-inch rack type, and some are tower type. Why don’t customers choose a smaller UPS that is suitable for the power of the security camera cabinet scene, such as 200VA 300VA? Because the choices in the market are very limited, most UPS manufacturers need to consider more extensive and standard needs, so the UPS they produce are generally in standard specifications of 1KVA, 2KVA, 3KVA or even larger. This results in the security camera cabinet becoming very large and heavy. This is not without cost, as CCTV sites are usually outdoors and often require pole mounting. The installation of a heavy security camera cabinet requires the use of a crane and multiple engineers, which has a high hidden cost.

  • Battery

Generally, customers will use lead acid battery to match UPS when designing security camera cabinet. Because lead acid battery is cheaper and reliable. However, lead acid battery is not the best choice. Although it saves a lot of money in procurement cost, its weight and size also make the security camera too large. The negative impact caused in the end is as we explained before, making the security camera cabinet too large. Moreover, the connection cable between the lead acid battery and the UPS is similar to a patchwork solution. The cable connection is not reliable enough and the integration is also low.

  • POE Switch

If a 1kva AC UPS is used in the above solution, the POE switch must not use AC power. The size of the POE switch with AC power is generally much larger than that of the POE switch with DC power, and the energy efficiency is not optimal.

  • Power Distribution and Cables

If the traditional security camera cabinet solution is adopted, the customer will have to connect all the systems by themselves. If you carefully consider the power supply and network topology, you will find that a large number of different cables are required. How to properly wire and how to prevent the cables from becoming messy due to debugging, expansion and other operations during long-term maintenance becomes a big problem.

In addition, it is necessary to know that the sites of CCTV cameras are far away. Many times, it is not easy to install the security camera cabinet at a distant site. It is necessary to debug and install at the site to ensure the normal operation of the entire system. However, it is difficult to obtain technical support from the headquarters in time because the site is far away. This delays the entire deployment process.

Complex Cables

As shown in the figure above, in many cases, the cables and installation are clear when the site is first deployed, but as time goes by and maintenance work is done multiple times, things become confusing. Or, if a maintenance engineer leaves and the next engineer fails to hand over the work properly, this problem will occur.

Security Camera Cabinet Can be Optimized with 48V DC UPS System

The above diagram is our proposed architecture, which will greatly simplify the architecture of the Securicit camera cabinet, making it as small and highly integrated as possible.

  • UPS uses 48V DC UPS system with appropriate capacity

The main reason why we recommend using a 48V DC UPS system is that DC 48V is actually the most suitable voltage for the POE module of the POE switch.

POE Standards Information

Notes: PSE: Power Source Equipment  PD:POE Powered Device  So in our case PSE is the CCTV Power Supply and PD is the CCTV Camera

Another key point is that Edgeware is designed based on the power commonly used in security camera cabinets, usually 300W/200W. This way, the power of the entire system fully matches the demand, so there is no need to increase the size of the security camera cabinet due to the configuration of a larger UPS.

  • Lithium Battery Embedded

When Edgeware designs the entire system, it will be designed according to the power of the customer’s equipment and use lithium batteries with higher energy density. This makes the battery basically equal to 10-20% of the volume and weight of the same capacity lead acid battery. Then the lithium battery is directly integrated into the entire 48V DC UPS system, thus avoiding the customer’s integration and wiring work.

  • DC48V POE Switch Embedded

The POE Switch uses a DC48V power supply and is pre-integrated and debugged in the security camera cabinet before leaving the factory, so there is no need for customers to perform integration and debugging work after receiving the product.

  • No Need Power Distribution and Cables

Based on the optimization mentioned above, the entire system is highly integrated and customers no longer need to worry about issues such as interconnection and wiring between devices.
